I live in Chicago with my wife and three daughters. I love murder mysteries, teaching, and in warmer weather I enjoy gardening and a cup of chai in the yard.
My pronouns are:
I am a pathologist. Pathologists are a special type of doctor that are experts in the diagnosis of disease. We look at patient tissues (biopsy, blood, urine) and diagnose what illness they have by using a microscope in a laboratory.
My expertise is in the diagnosis of blood cancer for example leukemia or lymphoma. I am the doctor that reviews patients blood, bone marrow, or lymph node specimens under a microscope to find out if they have cancer or not. I use a variety of techniques including assessing patient cells, chromosome, DNA by way of cutting edge tests to come to a diagnosis. Once a diagnosis is made, I send a report of this to the patient’s other doctors so that they can start treatment.
My Typical Day:
After breakfast, I head to the hospital where I diagnose cases using a microscope. I teach other doctors about diseases of the blood and bone marrow as well. Usually, lunch is with friends and colleagues after which it is more work. In the evenings I am home enjoying time with my wife and three daughters.
What I'd do with the prize money:
I would use the money to help build a program that exposes students to careers in the laboratory.
So many students don’t know of the amazing and rewarding careers that are present in the laboratory. From being a histotechnologist, biomedical scientist/medical laboratory scientist, pathologists’ assistant to a physician-pathologist. I would create a mechanism (website) to introduce students from all backgrounds to these STEM careers, and schedule them to visit/rotate in hospital laboratories to see our work in person.
