My expertise is in the diagnosis of blood cancer for example leukemia or lymphoma. I am the doctor that reviews patients blood, bone marrow, or lymph node specimens under a microscope to find out if they have cancer or not. I use a variety of techniques including assessing patient cells, chromosome, DNA by way of cutting edge tests to come to a diagnosis. Once a diagnosis is made, I send a report of this to the patient’s other doctors so that they can start treatment.

My Typical Day:
After breakfast, I head to the hospital where I diagnose cases using a microscope. I teach other doctors about diseases of the blood and bone marrow as well. Usually, lunch is with friends and colleagues after which it is more work. In the evenings I am home enjoying time with my wife and three daughters.

So many students don’t know of the amazing and rewarding careers that are present in the laboratory. From being a histotechnologist, biomedical scientist/medical laboratory scientist, pathologists’ assistant to a physician-pathologist. I would create a mechanism (website) to introduce students from all backgrounds to these STEM careers, and schedule them to visit/rotate in hospital laboratories to see our work in person.
